Well I researched for about a month and finally figured out what tires I wanted for the Dakota, and decided on BF Goodrich All-terrains. I've had good luck with these tires before and was really happy to find out that they were available for my truck, according to Discount Tire:

http://www.***********************/direct/findTireDetail.do?mk=&yr=2005&c=1&cf=false&sw=false&cs=265&pc=38890&rd=17&vid=008923&ar=70&tc=GDYRAA

The stock tires are just one size smaller than these, so I figured they would probably fit easily. Went to Discount Tire, ordered a set, came back the next day to have them put on, only to find out they DON'T fit -- at least not in the front, and were actually rubbing the inside of the front fender well. :VHOT:

So Discount Tire falsely advertises these tires being ok for a 2005 Dakota......but I don't blame the guys in the store (who have been selling me tires for years) for that.

So I did some more research and found out there is only one BFG All-terrain tire that will work on the Dakota, and it's the one on the TRX4 models, and those trucks only come with 16-inch wheels. Well I have 17's. So now I'm either looking at buying wheels and tires, or buying a different tire -- and the choices either way are very few. It seems Dodge has engineered the Dakota to prevent us from putting larger tires on the truck without lifting -- and lifting the truck is not an option for me.

BTW, here's another tire I'm considering... seems to be a step down from the one I wanted though:

http://www.***********************/direct/findTireDetail.do?mk=&yr=2005&cf=false&sw=false&cs=265&pc=38351&rd=17&vid=008923&ar=70

And my main considerations for the tires are that I want something a little more "rugged" looking than the stock Goodyears, and most importantly, I want to be able to put the "white letters" in to avoid scraping and scuffing them up. Plus having the white letters in makes the tire look a little bigger, IMO.

Should I just keep looking for some nice chrome 16-inch wheels and get the BFG tires I wanted?

Or does anyone have another tire suggestion???

I'm so frustrated I even thought about trading in my beloved Dak for a Ram. :help:

Well I just checked out their website and they do make a tire the same size as the BFG's I was trying to put on the Dakota. The question is, will this tire fit any better than the BFG? I'm not sure looking at the pictures, that there's any reason to think it will. :(

IF they made something the same size as the stock tires, but beefier, I'd be all over it.

I have the TRX4 Pac W/the BFGs TA KOs and I always was a Michelin man but I really like the BFGs. Very smooth for a LT tire construction. Great in rain and with four wheel drive turned on it holds it's place in these Florida down pours. We plan on taking Graythang II to Wisconsin this winter for a family visit and we may get to drive it in some snow.

After much reading, Nitto Terra Grapplers and Toyo Open Country AT were also on my list of acceptable tires. You might find a decent tire there, but most brands are pretty limited in 16"

And I have 17" wheels, and there are plenty of tires that work, but few that fit the Dak without lifting it.

Anyone else got a suggestion??????:help:

have you tried www.tirerack.com? I am shopping there and there are a lot of choices.

Tire Rack charges a bunch of shipping though. You might as well just buy the same tire locally and pay the extra money, plus eliminate the hassle of having truck tires shipped to your house...screw that.
And everybody I know that ever had BFG's never got any mileage out of them. They are really soft and just don't last. 35,000 miles is all I've ever seen on them and this set was shot, and Michelin LTX M/S's I've seen with 60,000 on a full sized truck. You can't beat Michelin tires if you are willing to pay for them. Michelin owns BFG I believe, but the tires are not equal.

I knew they did. They are good site for research however. I just got Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's and I love them! Great handling and no more spins at start during rain. They look great and hardly any extra noise from the stock crap Wrangler SR-A's that were on there.

Why do 20s fit Dakotas, but not 16s?

I know this is kind of a weird place to look but i was in Sears about a week ago and Man,.. I was surprised at the Performance Tires that they keep in Stock there. So if you get the chance,... looking at Sear might help you out.

Good Luck,...

Hmm... thanks for the info. I'll check out the Toyo's. I like supporting Sears since they give great benefits to their employees who serve in the military, so I would buy from them in a second if they had something that would work. :)

When the stock goodyears wear out I'll be getting Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's for my '06 Dak. I had them on my '00 Dak and liked them a lot.
