I have a 96 Neon 2.0 SOHC. Intermittently the engine will rev up pretty high on its own then slow back down to normal. No codes, run fine. Any ideas ?

IAC Idle Air Control. Thats my guess too.
Since we are on the subject My car has been doing this too. Only when I first start it.
I just replaced the IAC sensor also. It's new! It wont rev up high but maybe 2 grand on a good one LOL.....It runs like a top I done a few ebrake burns in first tonight. But I didnt rev it up I just took off as normal and floored it.Lots of smoke then I grabbed 2nd and smoked them more but with the e-brake off. I know it isnt hurting for power.
The roads are clean and dry as a bone! And it wouldnt do that stock...well maybe a little but not like it does now. besides that I was burning my old Glacier Grip winter treads. They like to hook up!
What do you think my problem is Hoodoo? Put my old sensor back in and try it?
It used to idle down with the old sensor and now it idles up! WTF?

You have to have a vacume leak if it is high idleing. An engine is just a compressor so you need air for it to rev.

Yeah. Check your vacuum lines and also check your intake mani for any leaks.
Splash some water around your intake mani seal and see if anything bubbles when u rev her up a bit with ur finger on the accellerator cable on the tb.
Damn modern cars with their sensors and crap. I said it b4 and I will say it again. Bring back the old fashioned designed v8s with carbies! lol

I know ur car is puttin down alot more hp than standard acr but I also thing those crappy worn tyres help u alot with your burn outs! lol.
I pulled up at a light the other night with 2 ricer boys beside me. Here they were all ready to race. I pulled up along side one of em a cars distance behind. 3 of us in a lane each. Light went green and I put down a bit too much gas, smoked all thru first and into second a bit on a perfect dry road with great tyres. I was across the intersection before they even took off! lol And thats with the cars distance head start. lol. All hail the ol neon! These cars keep surprising me! and alot of other would be racers! Bring on my new cam! woohoo. Wish I could justify getting the head ported but hey, she runs great as it is. All hail the mighty longtubes!

LOL and i thought i was the only one thinking that!!!!!!!! Sorry ACR, but I have to agree with Hoodoo.... I've got basically the same mods as you and I dont fry right through second on a dry road like you did on the "video gone bad"... granted, I have different gears, but still....

I don't know what to tell you Rice! The tires on the car now are different tires than the ones I roasted on the video. After the video I had to change the old worn out summer treads for my decent treaded winter tires. They were not worth a shit after that. My winter tires are better than those were but they arent that great either.
All I wanted to do was let you know it's not running like it's messed up.
If I had a vacume leak wouldn't it leak and Idle high all the time?????
It don't seem to do it after the car is driven a ways. And the idle jumps up to 1500 then back down and back up and back down. Tonight leaveing work it seemed just fine. But the night b4 it acted crazy as well as when I left to go to work today. It has me baffled!!!!!! But I will look for vacume leaks! I cant hear one with my ear while it idles up and down. I tried.
BTW Rice/Hoodoo You have to remember also that all roads are not made the same. I can drive to PA and tell you when we are there with my eyes closed.
I will be honest and say the roads were kinda damp on the video burn out. Thats why it spun like that in third!!!!! Normally I can only chirp third and I have to hit the shift points right or forget it!!!!! Same thing goes with smaokeing them in second on dry roads. If I get a bad shift to third.....just a few hundred rpm's off it only chirps second. If your tire is still spinning when yo hit 2nd you will do alot better burn in that gear. Ya follow me there?
