New Ram Owner

I just bought a $700 honey. It's a 84 short bed, Red and White Prospector with a 318. I assume the Propesctor package was just a trim option so it's not that rare. I'm going to try to bring it back from almost extinction. Got it running with a tune up and a cat converter to pass inspection. Next is solving a transmission problem. When I put it into Reverse or Drive the vehicle slams into gear like the engine idle is high. Anyone have a idea about what the problem could be?

Internal line pressures may be too high. Since it's been sitting I would change the fluid and filter to begin with and check the engine and trans. mounts. If you're still having trouble, a trans. shop can check and adjust the pressures.
