View Full Version Of This Page : How To Remove Wiring Harness from Tail Light Assembly?

I bought a tail light assembly to replace one that was scratched. I was able to to take the whole tail light assembly off the car with no problems. But how does the wiring harness come off the tail light assembly? I thought they were screwed together but it looks like they're being held together by two plastic rivets of some sort. I didn't want to try prying them apart and breaking something. Does anyone who has had their tails tinted care to share their secret? Thanks!

Do they look like a plastic pop rivits, I think it's called a "push retainer"? See pic. If so just use a small nail puller or some dikes (wire clippers) to get under the center "post" lip and pop it up. Then you can pull the "push retainer" out.

Thanks Hedgehog! I'm not sure if it looks exactly like that but I'll take a closer look when I take the tails off.

You will have to either melt them off or just cut the top of the plastic off. I choose to melt mine off and then just used plastic welder to melt them back together.

Hope I was not to late on this.

Hum... their obviously not what I was thinking they were.

Sounds like their ment to stay for a while, get out the torch and blastem. I'm going to look for these little buggers and see what the heck they are.

Thanks Mighty Noid!

No problem. When I got my new tail lights and noticed that the plug doesn't just snap off like the Magnum's & 300C's. I was like what the heck.

But yes all the Chargers are like that and you have to melt them off with a solder iron or a portable solder iron. I used the portable unit with a hot knife, came out clean and was easy to re-melt them back on.

You can see pictures of my new tail lights on my webshots link below.

Thanks for chiming in Mighty Noid! You're not too late. I haven't had a chance to take the tails off since last week. I wonder why they made it so complicated to remove the harness. So I guess I'll have to wait until I get the proper tool to refasten the harness when I get the tails tinted...

By the way Mighty Noid (and I'm saying this in the most manly way I know how), I looked at your webshot page and I love your tail. How long have you had them on and how's the body-coloured paint on the lense holding up?

I had a place called Avon Customs in NJ do they. You may want to check out there website.

I took the left tail off and snapped a few shots. I still don't have the proper tools to switch tails so I'll have to wait a bit for those tinted tails...

Yup that is the connector alright. I just melted down the tops of those two black tips and pulled it right off. Then when the other lights came to me, I just used a razor blade to clean it up and then placed the connector back on top and remelted it down and a little bit of epozy. All good.
