Hello, this is my first post on this site. I've got an 87' (D or W) 100 with a 3.7L slant 6. I just put a remanufactured starter on it and it worke fine for about 2 months. The other day it started raining (and hasn't stopped since) and when I started the truck the starter kept spinning. I turned the ignition off and on a few times and even took the key out, but it kept spinning. So I kept flippin the stupid thing on and off and it finally stopped on it's own. I've driven it several times since then and sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. Ive even driven with the retarded sucker spinnin, so I don't think the shaft is extended after the truck starts.
Do I have an ignition switch problem? Or maybe a solenoid problem? Or is my Autozone rebuilt junker starter not fit to be installed on this fine piece of Mopar machinery? :help:

I'm going to go with ignition switch. The ignition switch would cut off the solinoid if it was good, and the starter wouldn't have / get any power. Make sure the cables to the starter (there are two) are isolated. If you have a 2WD it's a D, 4WD is W.

The relay could be sticking as well.

if the motor started and kept it spinning when it was running it could be that the starter gear isnt disengaging from the fly wheel

No, I don't think it's that, I thought of that. He drove it with the starter spinning. If it was engaged to the flywheel while he drove he'd know it.

Yeah, it's either the switch, the solenoid/relay, or possibly the starter itself shorting out inside maybe?

Thanx for the replies. I guess I'll start with the ignition switch and solanoid/relay. If it turns out to be the starter I can just take it back. My uncle had the truck for 2 years and sold it to me for $500. I've had it for 2 months and have only put on new front shocks and the starter. An ignition switch and solanoid/relay won't hurt too bad, considering I'm driving a slant 6 now instead of an 84' f-150 with a 302 22 miles each way to work.

Did the old starter do this or did it start happening when you installed the new starter?

The old starter was only grinding, and that stopped when I replaced it. It didn't start this till like 6 or 8 weeks after I replaced the starter.
I bought the relay and ignition switch. I replaced the relay and saw in the book that I'll need to pull the steering wheel to get the switch, hopefully the relay will be what I needed. I'm gonna wait for it to spin on me again before I snatch my steering wheel and blinker switch off the truck. I'll probly even trade the starter back for another replacement before I do that.
Thanx for the responses guys. This will be the first time I'm really messing with a Dodge. I've got a 89 Dakota but I don't like it cause it's fuel injected.
