We just picked up a red 04 SRT-4 and I think the salesman put a full tank of 87 walmart gas in it. About half way home it started this detonation/valve clatter noise and I assumed that he had put in the 87 and it would fix itself with some good gas. We have had this car since last saturday and have put 6 tanks of shell 93 through it and it seems to be getting louder. It doesnt really start to make the noise until around 2500 rpm. I am planning on taking it to the delaer in the morning but just wondered if anyone has had this problem. It it looks to be basically stock except the mopar perf. exhaust and the MSD plug wires. Maybe someone from here traded it and would be able to tell me little about it. It has a sticker on the front door windows from the tint shop in Martinsville,VA.

The PCM would/is supposed to retard timing and drop boost in a case like that. You would have to think running through 6 tanks of 93 would definitely clear up any octane issues.

I dunno... Definitely get it to the dealer. Come back and let us know what the problem was.

Just thought I would update everyone on what is going on. Took it to dodge today and they are putting in a whole new motor. The service writer said that it had been checked by everyone up to the service manger level and that the motor has the wrong bore size. It causes excessive piston slap once it warms up. So basically we bought a car with a blown motor and wasnt able to tell until we were about halfway home. I am really glad that dodge is covering everything and we are getting a new short block and cams. Should run good, they said it would be ready tomorrow.

Wow

Well that's not too bad for you... How many miles were on the car?

we bought it with 10003 and it has a little over 11500 right now. They didnt question a thing just ordered the new motor. Now that it will have a new motor I am ready to mod. Where do you get most of your stuff and what to start with first?

"TSB 09-007-04

SUBJECT: Irregular Engine Snapping Sound

OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves chamfering the bore radius on cam bearing caps L2 through L5 and R2 through R5.

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 2.0L, 2.4L DOHC, or 2.4L Turbo engine (sales code ECC, EDZ, ED1, EDV, ED2, or EDT).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION: The sound may be noticed when the engine is idling in park between idle rpm and 1400 rpm at normal operating temperature. The sound is on the upper end of the engine (cylinder head) towards the front of the engine or passenger side (right side). The sound is irregular, not periodic or harmonious. The frequency of the sound will increase with RPM. The sound is more of a higher pitch snapping noise, not a low metallic knock."

Just brought my car in for this today. As for parts... ModernPerformance.com, JMBPerformance.com - great stuff.

The dealer actually said that it is the piston bore not the cam cap bore. She said that they have had to replace about 5 now with the same problem. Apparently it is the 04 that is having all the probs. She went back in the computer to see if they were all 04's and they were. It will be ready in the morning and she said that no one has come back with this problem after the new short block.

Just 04s?...I hope I don't end up with that problem. Especially around my area, some of the dodge techs are idiots. They didn't even know what a short throw shifter was. Taking my baby in for a tune up anyways, I don't notice anything different right off the back but if anything is irregular the guys should let me know when I take her in. BTW its my babys B-Day next month on the 19th! She be 2 y/o with under 27000 miles. Yay!
