78 Dodge truck

I have a 78 4x4 with the 2 barrel carb. I want to upgrade to an Edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carb. I am being told by a neighbor that the 600 cfm is too big for my 318 cid and that I should go with a 450 or 500 cfm. What is too big?

What exact model is the truck? Thanks

600 is a little big for a stock 318, but should work okay. I agree with your neighbor though, get a 500 cfm.

many people dont fuss about the smaller ports? how much will you lose running the 2bbl heads?

What exactly do you mean?

arnt the ports significantly smaller on the stock 318 2bbl heads?

I think he means intake--not heads, i.e. plopping the 4bbl. on the stock 2 bbl. manifold maybe?, which won't work to my understanding.

ok im confused.. the ports on the head are smaller than the 4bbl intake ports am i right?

Depends on what intake. They made 318's w/ 4-bbls, ports should be the same. I've only seen a few intakes with bigger ports, I even had a Victor 340 intake at one time that had 318-sized ports. Only 360 J and 340 X heads had bigger ports.

Stock 2bbl. 318's had small intake ports. 318's equipped with 4bbl. carburetors used 360 heads from the factory.

However using an Edelbrock Performer intake and a 500 cfm carb. on the 2bbl. heads isn't going to hurt anything.

Hey, will that intake and carb work on an 87??? If it will, and the carb works, I might be interested in buying it if it's for sale. Anything to unload that rochester setup I have!

78 Dodge Truck's 2bbl. and intake...in the first message in this thread. If he wants to go w/ Edelbroch intake and carb, I'd like to buy his original setup and get rid of my rochester air sucker.

Is it running or has it been running recently? Don't want something that needs an immediate rebuild. It's going on my daily driver. If it's good to go, then it's a deal! Now on mine, I do hear a big air draw somewhere which I haven't isolated yet, but the truck runs fine. Might be normal. There is also a problem with the choke on it. I also replaced the temp/coolant switch for the egr since I broke the original one, (the one where one line goes to the egr + the other to the carb). Not sure if it's the right one or not because the manifold isn't original, but again, truck runs great. Mine orig. had a carter 2bbl. and stock intake mani. and it was replaced with one that was on a 360 I think. If I think of any more issues I'll let ya know. I'm a little in the dark with the electric choke setup since this is the newest mopar I've owned. My last-oldest was a 78 (Aspen) and had the vacuum/diaphram choke. Also, anything else you want me to look at let me know.

Yeah it was running recently. It's a stock dual plane 2-bbl intake off a 318 w/ the old mechanical heat choke w/ the vacuum pull-off. I can even stick it on my '72 and make sure it's running fine still, if you want, since I have it running w/ a 2bbl right now.

As long as the carb is working fine on yours, I don't care about thermo-switches and what-not on the intake. It won't have anything on it but a carb and a temp sending unit if it goes on mine :)

No, don't go through the hassle. Should be fine. Never had a problem with one gumming unless it was sitting for a loooong time. PM me with a good time to ship it out, so I can pull it and arrange to borrow my father in-laws car while the truck is down, and what you want me to take off or leave on, like the tranny kick down bracket, egr, etc., if you're still running that...Thanks.

What exactly does the tranny kick down cable do and what will happen if it is not adjusted correctly and what position is correct.

i have a 600 cfm edlebrock on my 360 and it's a little too much. if you put one on a 318 you may need to change the jets to lean it up a little.

What exactly does the tranny kick down cable do and what will happen if it is not adjusted correctly and what position is correct.Kicks the trans into passing gear when you mash the gas. If it's not adjusted right it either won't downshift properly or it will stay in the gears to long (make it shift at high rpms).

I just put an Edelbrock 600cfm electric choke, EGR, square-bore carburetor (model #1400) onto the Edelbrock header for the 318 (#2176). Both parts were about $550 from Checker, and installed by Saguaro Auto here in Tucson for like $400.

Lot of money, but it runs FREAKING GREAT. I was towing my Bug and barely noticed it was there - an obvious difference and some more HP as well.
