i think i might be close to getting stock 318 performance out of my slant i have taken 0.060 off my head and added a mopar purple cam P4120243 along with a carter bbd this will all bolt to a 904 automatic transmission and 323 rear gears
now for the question part am i thinking correctly on this or do i need to do more to this slant to match a stock 85 318 in performance

No one should under estimate the performance potontial of that slant six.......Years ago, in the early 70`s, I drove a larger dodge trk, hauling two farm tractors and towing a trailer behind with another tractor on it....This was a large flat bed truck, I think it was Military surplus........Anyway, As I remember , this trk had a 250 cu. in slant six in it, and it performed very well.
Also, (now my age is gonna show), I had a friend who bought a brand new 61 Dodge Lancer, who had the hyper pac kit installed...To the best of my memory, it had a long runner intake, with a 4 bbl sitting next to the fender well, and improved cam , and beefed up drive shaft, and some valve body work on the torque flite.
It had the buttons for shifting, on the left side of the steering wheel.....He called it his ``typewriter``...........When that thing took off, it screamed, and laid rubber the whole way, till he punched `2`..... then the wheels broke loose again,,,,, ohhhh damn, what I wouldnt give to have that thing now..........oh well,,,,,,,, good mopar memorys, least I did sit in one at the time, and enjoyed it.............. Sweet! A 250 is a flathead though, not a Slant :)
You should be close to like 80's 318 performance, I imagine the cam should help you out a lot.

RE: speed dragon....... that trk I drove hauling the tractors, was definitly a slant six......I think that truck was a mid 60`s dodge, the owner got it off some military base, in a surplus sale...
I was worryed, hauling that load from NJ to bedford, Pa. going up and down those mountains in Pa,,,,I kept checking the oil, wish I paid better attention to the size, but, best I remember , it was larger than the 225....

^ +1, although it's always possible they had some undocumented test mules for the military maybe. As an example, you hear of or see a Slant 6 diesel? I bet not, but they were made.

There was a 6 Cylinder Diesel,,,, Perkins diesel engine made for the D-100 truck! Problem was,,,, Did not have enough power to get out of a wet paper bag full of holes! Truck was called "TOP HAND" built when the "MACHO"( Warlock, Lil Red Express ) series trucks were made!(77-80)

Yes it is!
A lot of people think an in line 6 can't do much,,, BUT!!!!
A lot of Diesel engines in semi's are inline 6 !
There are a few V8, V10, V12, V16 Diesels too!
Here's something to make you think!
Cruiseships are Diesel powered! The cylinders is big enough to park an 18 Wheeler in!

The ones I was talking about were actual Slant 6 diesels, basically a gas Slant converted to diesel, similar to how GM came up w/ their V8 diesel.
I heard of the Perkins diesel, didn't know anything about them. My boss at work is putting a Cummins 4-cyl turbo diesel into his 57 M37 PowerWagon.
