Ok fellas I’ve got an ’83 W150 it has a 318 and stock carburetor. One day last month I was driving it down the road and it was running great, then all of the sudden it just died. It acted like it was starving for gas, I would pump the gas peddle and it would go then die. I pulled into a side street and called a family friend and towed it over to his house. He opened up the carburetor and saw what he described as “pepper flakes” in the bowl. He rebuilt the carburetor and everything was great once again.

Last weekend the same thing happened when my son & I were out. I was able to get it home. Today the family friend and myself checked out the carburetor again and he pointed out the “pepper flakes” to me. He said that the flakes could be coming from the charcoal canister and we ought to replace the filter on the line that runs to the carburetor from the canister. I’ve looked thru my Haynes manual and cannot find any reference to a filter in that line. Is this possible or should I be looking in a different direction?

I wanted to float this buy you guys here and see what you had to say about it.

Thanks,
Gary

There is a filter in the canister but no liquid goes from the carb. to the canister. The canister is there to absorb excess fumes so I'm a bit befuddled as to how dirt from the canister can get into the carb. But anyhoo, a few things could be causing the dirt getting into the carburetor.

Dirt or rust from the gas tank, a steel fuel line that is rusting internally, the fuel pump could be "coming apart" internally, or a dirty fuel filter.

This is exactly what was happening with the carb on my D-100. Apparently there is a diaphragm in that canister that can go bad, allowing the the charcoal to get up through the vents and into the bowl. My carb was plugged good with the stuff. I still haven't reconnected the canister yet, and won't until I can get a good replacement somewhere.

I also have a 83 D-150 and was wondering what the carb is on mine. 2 barrel? I dont know much about old trucks..And if i was to put a 4 barrel, would I have to change the intake?

If you have a slant six, it's a 1bbl. and if it's a 318 it's a 2bbl. or if you have a 360, it could either be a 2bbl. or 4bbl. But anyway on to your question. Yes you would have to change the intake.

I found a factory iron 340 intake at the All-Chrysler show in Carlisle, PA a couple of years ago for $40! It was a 68/69 casting. I popped it on my 360 and it ran great.

Your looking at close to $200 for an Edelbrock dual-plane intake. You can always go through Ebay for a used one. I just bought an iron 383 4bbl intake off of Ebay for $93.

Well I pulled the charcoal canister off of the truck and turned it over and these little bits of charcoal came out of the can, the same stuff that is in the carburetor.

I went tot the parts store and they did not have a part number for the canister but they did say that the canister had a filter that you could replace. So I bought it and tried to find a place on the canister that this thing might go and realized that the canister is not serviceable.

Does anybody know where I can get my hands on a new canister? I don’t want to go to a junk yard and pull an old canister off of a truck and be stuck with the same problem.

Gary---Just cut the line from the canister to the carb and put a universal in-line fuel filter in it. Probably 5/8" hose.
