i want to put my rebuilt tranny off of my 318 onto my 360 until i finish rebuilding my 318. will i run into a problem with torque converters? will i have to wait and put the engine and tranny in together? or will the swap be possible? because the tranny in my shortbox with the 360 is weak. both engine and tranny in the shortbox have 514,000 original kms on them. i would only be running the 360 and tranny for a month or so. can it be done??

The 360 is an externally balanced engine whereas the 318 is internally balanced. The torque converter will need to be balanced before it can be used or you can buy a new one that is for a 360 equipped truck.

Other than that, it's bolt-in.

hmm, so im SOL if i wanna use it lol, i dont want to really put money into the tranny, what about reusing the 360 torque converter, or is that not a good idea?

Sure..give it a try, the transmission won't know the difference. Just make sure you empty out the torque converter and fill it with some fresh fluid. You don't want dirty nasty fluid to contaminate the other transmission.

I've just bought a basket case 1984 W-150 Prospector. It has a bad automatic transmission, and a "good" replacement sitting in the bed. The truck had a 318 originally, but the young guy I'm buying it from built up a 360 and put it in. He seems technically proficient in Dodge trucks (actually described the effects of misadjusted bands and throttle kick-down linkage correctly in the 727), but I'm still a little leery about that "good" tranny.

Since I'm a noob when it comes to Dodge trucks, I'm new to this notion of "internally balanced" versus "externally balanced" engines, and getting the torque converter balanced before installing a tranny on a 360. Can someone explain that more fully for me? If the transmission came from a 318 (because I have no idea where it came from), what should I do special to get it to work on my new 360? What should I look for to confirm that it came from a 360 or later small block, should it already be balanced?

Thanks for your patient replies,
Scott

I'm not too sure on that, but a replacement converter for a 360 is only 100-300$... but that depends if u want to put money into it

I can buy a 360 torque converter new for like 70 bucks, from Dayco(sp?). IMO a new one is the way to go.

You can tell if it is balanced for the 360 already because it will have a weight weld to the front of it, whereas the 318 will not. The rest of the trans is the same.

If you have a tranny you know and trust, I'd have him go through the "good" trans and check it.

They are right about the torque converter balance issues.

318 Engine blanaced (TC has no weights)
360 Torque converter balanced (TC has 4 or more weights)

So if you use the trany from a 318 just swap the TC's from the two tranys. Easy to tell which is which.

I just finish a rebuild on my 727 Torqueflite (sprag cluch shattered and cluchs were gone). It lasted for over 30 yrs. 1974 W200 trany rebuilt 2006. These tranys were known to outlast. I have seen many trucks in the bone yards with blown motors, but the tranys were still good.

There are also many upgades to the trany you can do if you have it rebuilt before using it. The front pump can be from a 727/904/ or the AOD-overdrive. The pumps are same in fit, but each has a different pump internally.

There are a bunch more that can be found by searching for 727 rebuild tips and tricks.

Good luck

FYI:
B&M sells a flex plate replacement for a 360 so you can run any neutral ballance converter on the 360. It has all 3 bolt patterns (11 3/4, 10 3/4 small and big bolt).
I used one on our '77 Warlock 360. They have one for the cast crank 383/400 too.
