Have a friend with a '96 Neon, SOHC 2.0. His rear main seal is leaking like a sieve. Can this be fixed by just pulling the pan or does it require moving out the motor, pulling the flywheel, etc? Motor only has about 120k, so it's not quite ready for a replacement.

If it's anything like my DOHC with the Manuall tranny. You will have to take the tranny, clutch, flywheel off to get to it. I never done a sohc but im sure it's the same lacation lol. I did mine a few weeks ago. You will have to take off both front tires, and axles. Any time you remove the axles you want to buy new axle seals, Unless you want to do them a few days later! lol save yourself the head ache and buy all three seals at one time. The rear main was only about 8 bucks and I got my two axles seals at Napa for about 6 bucks apeice. Thats better than 6 for one and 9 for the other at Dodge Garage. I don't know why they would charge you 6 bucks for one seal and 9 for the other side (they are the same damn seal) money racket if you ask me. Anyhow you can have it done in a day if you got some help getting the tranny out and back in. Another hint I can give you is to really lift the car up off the ground a bit, I didn't lift it up all that much and suffered from lack of room under there. Made it a bitch to pry out the axle seals. BE CAREFULL YOU DON'T SCAR THE SEAL SEATS GETTING THE OLD SEALS OUT. WHICH IS TUFF TO DO. ESPECIALY IF THEY ARE AS HARD TO GET OUT AS MINE WERE.

If you need some more info feel free to ask LOL I can almost give you step by step instructions on how I did my seal. Later and good luck!

Sorry for not following up sooner- thanks for the feedback. My preference is to just fix the seal as it seems pretty straight forward. His wife want's to replace the motor with a lower mileage one. Hopefully we do one or the other soon! I'll be in contact if we end up replacing the seal.

yea ive had a real main seal leak for awhile now its not that bad at all and all i can say is that im not fixing it until i see oil explode everywhere lol cause thats a pain in the ass to change a lil ass seal that aint causing no trouble at the time being.

When your clutch starts to slip you will wish you spent a few hours to replace the seal! Becouse then you will have a 300$ clutch to replace as well as 3 seals that only cost a few buucks apeice. It may not have much of an effect on an ATX but It isn't no good on an MTX. Just my thoughts on that yo! Later

my clutch chooses its choice moments when it wants to slip but o well it needs to be replaced with a stage 1 ne ways im ****in cursed with no credit and no relatives who want to co sign for me so my chances of getting a new car is like me trying to get laid with lindsy lohan....it just aint gonna happen. so i just decided to fix up wat i have already i guess which was wat i was gonna do n the first place....i have to fix wats wrong first like all the struts and ac....living in tx with no ac blows by the way...then on two new tb, header, top end kit and so forth...

I know all about the credit deal.LOL And living anywhere without an AC sucks. I live in WV and it sucks. But I was tired of throwing belts off so I eliminated it.

I replaced my clutch with a Spec stage 1 when I done my rear main seal. That was at 127K. The clutch was worn a bit! LOL OK alot. But it still worked fine! Later

Ok i just finished yesterday doing my 98' SOHC real main seal it was kinda a bitch and for the guy who figured it doesnt do any damage.... maybe because your leaking oil everywhere. i had oil ****ing everywhere in my engine bay it took 7 cans of brake clean to clean that shit up and i am going to do some more. my seal was getting so hot it make a ring on my flywheel blue and it made a groove. replace that shit it was $45cdn at napa for a steel/rubber composit and now no leaks. you have to take the tranny out and u should buy the Haynes manual it will tell u some details/specs/torque so ask on here and i will tell u exactly what to do

Thats what I though was my prob too. So I tore the motor down and found the rear main was in mint condition. It was a leaky cam position sensor and 2 blown driveshaft seals sprayin oil about.
Wat are other ppls cars like on oil? I heard that the 420a engines from new use a bit of oil. Is this true? My car pops a bit of smoke on start up when cold for a split second. Only has 60000 miles on it. So I been told its definately valve seals as worn rings etc it would blow smoke all the time. For the cost of the seals and a rocker here in aus I can buy and ship over a ported head with new rockers, cam and seals cheaper! Go figure!

ya i personally would wait until the motor blew and get an upgraded one. I've just went down to the local parts store and bought some bluebgone but any smoke(getter-rid-of-er) would work. Mine blows a little bit but i drive it fairly hard

Yeah, good advice slick. Dont maintain your vehicle, hell dont even check the oil. Just run it until it blows up and blame it on the car.

Neons dont die, stupid people dont check the oil.

You are a douche. Did u even read my other posts????

I change my oil every 3000KM w/ 10/40 synthetic and lucas oil stabilizer. I probobly do more preventative maintenance than you. I change my Aurora wires and platnium plugs every 15000 - 20000km. i've changed my timing belt and various other gaskets because i've noticed some small leaks. Neons are cheap cars.....when u realize that start talking again. . if the engine breaks build a better one.. i would personally spend more money on my racecar but thats just me :rck:

YES Neon are cheap cars!!!!!! They are cheap to buy and If they are maintained last just as long as any car . Jaguar isn't cheap! but they have more tranny problems than Rosie Odonel has issues! The fact they are cheap is totally irrelevant!!!!!!!!! Not to mention they dominated SCCA pretty much! They are a 11K car that can stomp the guts out of cars costing three times as much. Some were even built for this purpose! They are the ACR's.

BTW lets not start the Flamming shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because then I will get mad and it wont be pretty!!!!! SO LETS PLAY NICE BOYS!!!!!

You have to admit! Waiting for the motor to go boom is not good JUJU!!
Why would you even say that. I mean if you have the money to replace it why wait for it to leave you stranded on the corner by a Crack house at 200am????????? Thats just............well I wont say it!

Lets play nice or keep our negative comments to ourselves, If they are directed towards another person mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmK!

wow lol u tell em... lol my car has 8500 miles on it now and ive changed the oil twice since i got it... ( i got it with 5500) why cause 1st time my dad bought me 5w/30.... so i drained that shit week later and put in 10w/30... i've also changed my spark plugs twice ( ngk's of course...) twice because i ran race fuel ( 118 octane) few times just to see if it really made a difference in my new car... not just that i've rotated my tires also ... soo i think im pretty well maintenced... and for rice's defence.... he's always on here talking about maintencing something... so piss off dude... also if ne one wants a mopar performance bov plate for an srt-4 holla at me selling it for $20+ shipping... have to get new bov... mine got warped lmfao got to hot... all dodge dealership said is they could replace the factory one for free... but would prolly happen again... so buyign the turbonetics bov kit... ne way remain seal is a bitch... axel seals not to bad if tranny is outta the car so better do it while u got it out!

I just want to know why some1 would be by a crackhouse at 2am????? blowing it up if figureativly speaking I.E. if i started to lose compression or i changed my oil and a bunch of metal was pulled off my oil plug. I'm not talking about driving the shit out of it till i'm driving and it dies on me on some road.. cause thats not what i'm about :rck: so dont be bitchin at me about maintenance

5w30 would be a much better oil for you, being that you live in Canada and not California. Platinum plugs are over priced peices of sh!t. They carry less electricity than copper, and are softer, meaning they will melt easier, and they operate in a narrower heat range. The only thing they have going for them is that they last longer. Too bad they make most neons run like crappy. We've had whole threads worth of discussion on this topic.

:VHOT: ok i just changed my rear main oil seal and when i turned my engine on i got these codes

12 - Battery disconnected within last 50 startups(no~big~dealeo)

37 - open or shorted condition detected in the torque converter part throttle unlock solenoid control circuit

32 - an open or shorted connection detected in the EGR solenoid circuit. Possible air/fuel ration imbalance not detected during diagnosis.

 i dont understand what that means. any help would be great.
may it be loose connections to tranny? because there were 2 sensors that i plugged in when i put the tranny back ( one with 2 prongs and 1 with 3 prongs) maybe their not totally making contact? :help:

LOL since when do crack houses advertise?

Check your vacume lines for the EGR you may have knocked one loose.
Code 37 I have no clue! Clean the prongs and what not and reset the PCM.
Code 12 is nothing to worry about. It should clear and stay gone. I had code 12 for a year or two. I would clear it and a little later it would come back on. I battled the nerve racking check engine light for about 2 yrs with code 12. When I relocated my battery I used new cables 2 guage welding cables to be exact and ever since then I have not gotten that code! YAY!!!!! LOL Good luck!!

OH BTW. code 32 is saying that the PCM did not receive an Air/Fuel ratio. (I think)????
ANYONE!!!!! LOL am I right!
