I have a 97' neon. Just had both O2 sensors replaced along with a fuel pump and filter (costly at the dealer!). I had to get the work done for the vehicle to pass emissions in Texas. The engine light is on again! When I do the code thing with the key, I get a 51 (fuel system lean). This is killing me and I am at my wits end, and my pocket book. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you reset the PCM after the O2 sensors were replaced? (pull fuel pump fuse for 2-3 minutes) How long has it been since they were replaced? I would check the wiring to the O2 sensors, possible a wire or two is fried, giving a faulty signal. Also, code 51 does not indicate O2 sensor or fuel pump failure... the stealership just took your money. And '97s dont have a fuel filter... it is integrated into the pump... (again, looks like you got hosed). Code 51 just tells you the engine is running lean. Pull out a sparkplug or two, If they are white, you are running lean. If they are tan the engine is running fine. Once you find out if the engine is really running lean or not, we can find out what is causing the problem(s). Best of luck.

I had the sensors replaced two weeks ago and the fuel pump in January. The PCM was reset because the light was out and the emissions passed the inspection. Who knows, maybe the dealer knows how to get around that too? I'll check the wires. Thanks for the tips!
