I did a search in the Charger section and could not find where anyone asked or posted about this so bear with me.

How many of you do your own maintenance? Please reply as to oil brand and weight and the difficulty of doing this on your own.

Any other tid bits from your experience with tranny or rear diff or anything else I'd love to hear about. I like to learn from those who've been doing this for a while.

I'm 31 and have never owned a new car before so I'm a bit hesitant to do anything to my first newborn. Just a quick background, I've modded and maintained various 4cyl, mainly turbo mitsu's, 6 cyl, mainly Mazda's, and 8 cyl, my old 2gen Durango R/T.

I have a Charger R/T btw. Thanks for the help.

changing it yourself is not to bad you have a plastic skid plate you have to take off.. as for oil 5w20 is what is recommended if anyting other then that is put in then the MDS doesn't seem to work . as for brand it doesn't really matter as long as you change the oil in the corret intervules..

You can also go with 0W-40 in Synthetic. That is what is recommended for the MDS in the V-8 to work properly.

This is wrong info, people on another site have used this oil only to find that the MDS did not work. Use the recamended 5-20 and be done with it. If you want to do your own maintenance, do your self a favor and get the service manual from Dodge.

correct it is recommended for 5w20 for the 5.7 and 0w40 for the 6.1 so it depends on the engine on what weight to use and always look at the fill cap and use what it says for best results.

And the 6.1 is NOT MDS.

Holy crap. You planning on building a deck up there? Would suck if you forgot and stepped out for some fresh air. :thatfunny

Notice the sheet metal covered "nailer" under the door? That is for a deck.

There is a similar door/nailer on the back.

That is not my "residence" it is my garage with a small 1 room apartment on the 1st floor at the rear. The second floor was planned as a woodworking workshop with the option of making it an apartment at some future date. The door is for material ingress.

See the previous post.

The answer is YES to the deck question.

Hi, I have an 06 Charger Daytona RT, and found out the hard way. I changed my oil, using 5W-30 synthetic. 1 week later the car got stuck in 4 cyl mode. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong, until we discovered the oil weight difference. I dumped the oil and replaced with 5W-20. Now the MDS works just fine again. Don't make the same mistake.
